Solaia – The Supreme Expression of Exceptional Tuscan Terroir

Born in the grounds of Tenuta Tignanello in the Chianti Classico region, Solaia stands as one of Italy’s most prestigious red wines. Owned by the Antinori family, this exceptional wine first appeared in 1978, giving rise to what would later be known as the Super Tuscans. 

The vineyard covers about 20 hectares, ideally oriented southwest, and set at an elevation between 350 and 400 meters above sea level. The soil is composed of alberese (hard limestone), galestro (calcareous clay and shale), and other calcareous rock types of Pliocene origin, often rich in marine fossils — giving the wine a distinctive mineral backbone.

The blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Sangiovese and a touch of Cabernet Franc. Over the years, approximately 20% Sangiovese was incorporated, while the two Bordeaux varietals remain central to Solaia’s character. 

Winemaking and aging are meticulous: hand harvest, rigorous sorting, separate fermentation for each grape, followed by an 18-month aging in new French oak barrels, and further bottle ageing. Solaia is produced only in exceptional vintages; several years saw no production.

On the nose, Solaia shows intense ruby red with purple reflections; rich and complex aromas of black fruits (blackberry, currant), spices, vanilla, cocoa, often with balsamic or menthol hints. On the palate, it balances power with refinement: silky tannins, refreshing acidity, and a long, expressive finish. 

More than just a wine, Solaia is a symbol of the Antinori family’s pursuit of excellence and an embodiment of the Tuscan land’s nobility — prized by discerning enthusiasts and collectors alike.
